A driver who has been identified as Asiedu Murphy had lost his life after crashing into a house on the Bekwai to Obuasi road this afternoon. The driver, Asiedu, sustained serious injuries to the head and legs as he got stuck in the car after the accident. It took residents of Bekwai Odoo, a farming community within Bekwai, over one hour before they were able to set Asiedu free from the driver’s seat of the car.Â
He was taken by a motorcycle; in between the rider and another rescuer, to the roadside before a taxi coming from Bekwai, made a U-turn and took Asiedu to the Bekwai hospital. Asiedu may have lost a lot of blood as he got to the hospital with a low blood count. He was given a drip unit of blood and that still couldn’t sustain him as he lost the battle to the death at exactly 2 PM.Â
Hannah Ampaw, a farmer coming from her farm at noon, narrated that, Asiedu when he passed by her, was making a phone call while driving and that may have been the cause of the accident. He was using his one hand to drive while his other handheld an object to his right ear. His right hand was the hand holding the object which looked like mobile to his ears while the left hand steered the car.Â
He nearly hit me so I was monitoring him when he stopped a few metres ahead of me to apologise. He drove off and I couldn’t see him again until reaching home when I came across the people trying to rescue him from the accident, Hannah, a farmer who encountered Asiedu on the road before the accident shared with Bekwai police.Â
Asiedu may have been making a phone call as he drove, just as Hannah had shared; due to his mobile which was found at the back of his driver’s seat. The phone if it was hanging on his ears, would have fallen exactly to the back of the seat as the accident occurred. It hasn’t been confirmed he was making a phone call while driving, but looking at the position of the phone and the eyewitness accounts of Hannah, Asiedu may have caused his death through the accident.
It hasn’t been confirmed what cause the accident, but speed and loss of concentration may have been the cause of the accident as no curve was at the exact point the car veered off the road. The road is a straight road that leads to the Bekwai township and only speed and loss of concentration could make a car veer off the road and crash a house beneath the road, the residents of Oboo argued.
Residents of Oboo after rescuing Asiedu had thought he was going to survive but their guesses were wrong as Asiedu gave in to death at 2 PM. He has been taken to the mortuary bay of the hospital as his family is on their way to identify and claim the body. Bekwai police are still on the case to determine the cause of the accident.
