A robbery gang was pursued in a fiery shootout by residents of Wassa Asomdwie of the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality in the Western Region Thursday midnight. One of the suspected armed robbers was gunned down and butchered by the irate youth of the community.
According to reports, the gang were three in number who robbed a Mobile Money Operator and Cocoa merchant in the community that dawn. The victim of the robbery was a woman, whom the deceased had monitored for a while.
It is said that the deceased a day before the robbery had transacted some electronic cash payment at her shop, only to learn more about her target. The robbery gang according to Angel News’ reporter, locked up a male cotenant of the victim that dawn so that their operation would not be disrupted by any witnesses or neighbours.
All three robbers were armed and took away an amount of Sixteen Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHC16,000.00) being proceeds of some gold trade, and the Mobile Money business. The victim who was panicking when the robbers had left shouted for help and drew the attention of the entire community.
It is said that for the past week, some robbers have been terrorizing residents and as such almost every household have armed themselves with guns and other weapons. Some youth mobilized quickly and chased these armed robbers.
They engaged the robbers in a shootout and one of them got shot. According to eyewitness report, the two other robbers attempted to rescue their colleague by dragging him on the floor but were overpowered by the residents. They abandoned their colleague and absconded.
Some of the residents went after the two other robbers while a few others pounced on the maimed robber. They butchered and beat him to death. It was later that they realised that the armed robber was a resident of the community who have engaging in illegal mining operations.
The Bogoso Police has taken the matter up for investigations.
