The process that allows for urination by every human is carried out by the four organs of the urinary system, namely the kidney, ureter, urethra and bladder. The urine filtered from food substances by the kidney is transported into the bladder by the two ureters and are held by the bladder temporarily before it is transported out of the body by a tube called the urethra.

However, the optimum functioning of the urinary system could be affected when one or more organs of the system are affected by one thing or the other. The bladder is one of the organs that could be affected, especially in cases of an overactive bladder, which causes any affected person to have a constant urge to urinate, even after urinating.
Sometimes, a person with an overactive bladder may feel a sudden urge to urinate that is difficult to control and intentional loss of urine. The person could also urinate more than eight (8) times or more within 24 hours. The symptoms described above usually point to an overactive bladder. Unfortunately, certain unhealthy lifestyles often increase the risk of having an overactive bladder.

A few of the unhealthy lifestyles that should be avoided to prevent an overactive bladder in people who don’t already have it or to reduce its severity in people who have it already are highlighted below:
1. Being obese overweight – this predisposes many people to an overactive bladder because excess body weight often increases abdominal pressure, which, in turn, increases bladder pressure and mobility of the urethra.
2. Not engaging in regular, daily physical activity and exercise – lack of regular physical exercises often makes many people obese or overweight, which would, in turn, contribute to an overactive bladder in such people.
3. Excessive consumption of caffeinated drinks and alcohol – the excessive consumption of alcoholic drinks and beverages, as well as caffeinated drinks should be avoided as they often act as diuretics, which causes the body to produce more urine.
4. Smoking – smoking irritates the bladder and could make a person have a frequent need to urinate, as well as aggravate the symptoms of urinary incontinence in people with the condition.
Avoiding the unhealthy lifestyle factors mentioned above can significantly help you to prevent or manage overactive bladder if you have one. However, apart from steering clear of the lifestyle factors mentioned above, the types of foods and drinks you consume can also aggravate your condition if you have an overactive bladder.

In essence, it is recommended that you avoid or consume in moderation, certain foods that are generally referred to as “bladder irritant foods”. A few examples of such foods are described below:
1. Tomato products such as ketchup, pizza sauce and pasta often overwork the bladder and cause you to feel like urinating frequently.
2. Coffee and tea should also be watched due to their caffeine content which increases bladder activity and aggravates the symptoms of overactive bladder.
3. Chocolate should also be consumed in moderation due to its caffeine content.
4. Oranges, limes, and lemons should be watched due to their high content of citric acid which makes bladder control difficult.
5. Spicy foods and raw onions should also be consumed in moderation as they can easily irritate the bladder and cause frequent urination.
6. Alcoholic beverages – the consumption of alcohol should also be watched to prevent an overactive bladder.
