Placing one’s confidence in someone or something is a fundamental human experience, necessary for society to function and for any person to be relatively happy. It is called trust.
Without trust, fear rules.
Even though trust is important in every relationship, everyone has some uncertainty sometimes about whom to trust, how much to trust, when and when not to trust. In fact, every day we make choices about trust.
It is however necessary to note that a total lack of mistrust would indicate a serious psychological problem on the one who trust without reservations. One’s judgment about when and whom to trust help keep him or her safe and alive.
Adom 106.3 FM talk show, Yenbo Nkomo, hosted by TV and radio diva Maame Yeboah Aseidu (aka Maame Gold) talks about how thorny the issue of trust in relationships is, especially for women.
Queen mother of Asanteman Boben, Nana Abena Frimpongmaa II a panelist on the show thinks trust is having faith in your partner and taking whatever he or she says as true.
She explained that “trust is when you are seeing black but your partner says it is white and you believe him.”
Nana put it in simple terms saying “trust compromises”.
Nana Abena Frimpongmaa however noted that in relationships that are not built on the right foundation, trust can be lost and it will be difficult to restore.
‘’Most people rush into relationships without studying each other well to know their flaws, so they end up becoming suspicious of each other and that breaks trust,’’ she said.
Apostle Emmanuel Inkoom of The Radiant Place also defined trust in marriage and relationship as a total reliability and confidence in each other.
He however noted that trust is built over time and not automatic, adding that times tests the trust between two people in a love relationship.
Apostle Inkoom said when trust is lost in a relationship, it may be difficult to restore it, but not impossible because trust is what holds true love in every relationship.
‘’When trust is lost in a relationship it can be fixed because there is nothing too broken that cannot be fixed,’’ he said.
On the issue of people living with someone they do not trust, Apostle Inkoom said everyone has a special quality that a partner falls in love with, such that, no matter how bad the person is, because of that special trait, the partner tend to tolerate them.
He advised partners in love relationships to uphold the values of good communication, respect for each other and transparency as the bed rock of their relationship so than enjoy a suspicion-free relationship.
Yenbo Nkomo comes on every Tuesday between 8:30pm and 10pm on Adom FM
