‘Moulin Rouge,’ ‘Christmas Carol’ win early Tony Awards

Sept. 26 (UPI) — Moulin Rouge and A Christmas Carol were among the early winners at Sunday’s Tony Awards ceremony in New York.

Moulin Rouge star Danny Burstein took home the statuette for Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical. The show also scored the honors for Best Sound Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Orchestrations, Best Choreography and Best Costume Design of a Musical.

A Christmas Carol earned the prizes for Best Sound Design of a Play, Best Original Score, Best Lighting Design of a Play, Best Scenic Design of a Play and Best Costume Design of a Play.

Lauren Patten won the Tony for Best Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical for Jagged Little Pill. Its author, Diablo Cody, won for Best Book of a Musical.

Lois Smith won for Best Actress in a Feature Role in a Play for The Inheritance.

Audra McDonald and Leslie Odom Jr. are hosting the live event at the Winter Garden Theatre. The gala is airing on CBS and streaming on Paramount+

Jagged Little Pill went into the competition with a leading 15 nominations, followed by Moulin Rouge! The Musical with 14, Slave Play with 12, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical with 12, The Inheritance with 11, A Soldier’s Play with seven, The Sound Inside with six and A Christmas Carol with five.

Most of Broadway’s plays and musicals reopened this month after being closed since March 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. Sunday’s Tony Awards are recognizing excellence for the 2019-20 theater season.
