Black Avenue Boss, D-Black
Ghanaian musician and sound engineer, Desmond Kwesi Blackmore popularly known as ‘D-Black’ believes that it is high time Ghanaians appreciate their own songs and desist from giving prominence to Nigerian music.
The Black Avenue boss expressed dissatisfaction after discovering that all top 20 songs on Apple in Ghana have been dominated by Nigerian songs.
The list somewhat implies that a great number of fans prefer listening to Nigerian songs to Ghanaian music.
This situation DBlack believes needs to change if Ghanaians expect their artistes to compete with top artistes across the continent.
“Ei Ghana! Our TOP 20 Songs on apple music are 18 Nigerian songs!!? Awurade !!! How do we touch the rest of the world if it doesn’t start from home? Sigh. U guys here tweeting. Gh acts shud Make better music, blah blah, too known nkoaaa lol. Go take a look at other African charts. U think it’s just Ghana? It’s Kenya, Uganda, etc. The whole of Africa besides SA. And that’s cos Naija has a 90% local content policy. And that doesn’t affect SA because they have an 85% local policy. And support their music heavy from the people govt. Pushing their amapiano agenda heavy. Let’s change our mindsets chale . Talent Dey, Content dey. Stop with the Jesus syndrome,” he wrote on Twitter.
To D-Black, there is no justification for local fans to stream Nigerian and South African songs because Ghanaian artistes put in their best.
He added that Ghanaian music is great but the insatiable taste for foreign music is the reason for its low patronage.
