Sept. 10 (UPI) — Lucifer finishes its run with a sixth and final season, MTV presents the 2021 Video Music Awards and multiple specials on the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks will air this weekend.
In addition, filmmaker James Wan returns with new horror film Malignant, Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain star in a remake of Scenes from a Marriage and Mary Elizabeth Winstead is an assassin in Kate.
Here’s a rundown on some of the films, television shows and more that are set to be released this weekend.
Films
‘Malignant’ — HBO Max
Annabelle Wallis has visions of shocking murders only to later discover that they really happened in horror film Malignant, which comes to HBO Max and theaters on Friday. James Wan (Insidious, Conjuring) is directing. Maddie Hasson, George Young, Michole Briana White, Jacqueline McKenzie, Jake Abel and Ingrid Bisu also star.
‘Kate’ — Netflix
Mary Elizabeth Winstead is an assassin who has been poisoned and has less than a day to get revenge in this action thriller, which premieres Friday on Netflix. Winstead’s Kate also forms a bond with the daughter of one of her past victims. Woody Harrelson also stars in the film, from director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan.
‘Come From Away’ — Apple TV+
Apple TV+ presents this filmed version of Broadway musical Come From Away, which arrives Friday onto the streaming service. The musical follows 7,000 people stranded in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, after all flights in the U.S. are grounded due to 9/11. Christopher Ashley serves as director.
‘9/11: Inside the President’s War Room — Apple TV+
Jeff Daniels narrates this new documentary that explores the events of Sept. 11, 2001 from the perspective of former President George W. Bush and his closest advisors as they discuss the historic day. The documentary will be available for free on Apple TV+ on Saturday in honor of the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

‘Lucifer’ final season — Netflix
Tom Ellis isn’t quite ready to take the throne and become God in the sixth and final season of Lucifer, which premieres Friday on Netflix. The final season will also also include an animated sequence and a murder mystery. Lesley-Ann Brandt, D.B. Woodside, Rachael Harris, Aimee Garcia and Kevin Alejandro also star.
WWE ‘SmackDown’ — Fox
WWE returns to Madison Square Garden in New York City for this special edition of SmackDown, which airs Friday at 8 p.m. EDT on Fox. Brock Lesnar will confront Universal Champion Roman Reigns, Edge and Seth Rollins will battle in a rematch from SummerSlam and SmackDown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch will a sign a contract to face Bianca Belair.
‘9/11 Twenty Years Later: America Remembers’ — ABC
ABC will broadcast a special edition of Good Morning America to commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11 starting at 7 a.m. EDT Saturday, which will then lead into ABC News’ 9/11 Twenty Years Later: America Remembers. David Muir, Robin Roberts, Diane Sawyer and more will be on hand for the special, which will include coverage of a live ceremony in New York where the names of those killed will be read out loud.
‘9/11: Four Flights’ — History
9/11: Four Fights will recount stories of airplane passengers, crew, their families, military officers, air traffic controllers and more who were impacted by 9/11on Saturday starting at 8 p.m. EDT. The special will show the bravery and heroism of everyday people as they encountered a dangerous situation.
‘MTV Video Music Awards’ — MTV
The 2021 MTV Video Music Awards will honor some of the biggest stars in music Sunday, starting at 8 p.m. EDT. Justin Bieber leads all artists with seven nominations, followed by Megan Thee Stallion with six. Doja Cat is serving as the host and will perform along with Bieber, Shawn Mendes, Chloe Bailey, Twenty One Pilots, Camila Cabello, Lil Nas X, Machine Gun Kelly, Olivia Rodrigo and more.
‘Scenes from a Marriage’ — HBO
Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain star in this remake of Ingmar Bergman’s classic 1973 miniseries, which premieres Sunday at 9 p.m. EDT on HBO. The show will explore themes of love, monogamy, divorce and more by using a contemporary American couple.
‘American Rust’ — Showtime
Jeff Daniels is a police chief investigating a murder that has rocked his small town in American Rust, which arrives Sunday at 10 p.m. EDT on Showtime. The show is based on the Philipp Meyer novel of the same name. David Alvarez, Bill Camp, Rob Yang, Alex Neustaedter and Maura Tierney also star.
