The Electoral Commission (EC), of Ghana, has been advised to suspend the People’s National Convention (PNC) from its Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) following misconducts unbefitting of a political party.

Political Analyst, Michael Ebo Amoah made this call saying the PNC as an opposition party is expected to suggest alternatives to government policies that may not benefit the citizenry but, “a party which is supposed to keep the government on its toes is rather fighting over 70,000 cedis and this is sad.”

According to him, the EC must take drastic measures against the party for them to fall in line.

Speaking to Raymond Nyamador on the Happy Morning Show, Michael Eboa Amoah said, “the EC must move to suspend the PNC from some of the activities of IPAC until they get their act right.”

He indicated that the EC is mandated to audit the books of political parties regularly and believes if this is done for the PNC immediately, the chaos in the party will be resolved.

The political analyst believes suspending the PNC will prevent the party from dragging their mess to IPAC and tainting the good name of the EC.

“Should the EC call an IPAC meeting now who will represent the party? What will happen if members of the various factions in the party attend the meeting? Who will the EC address? The EC needs to suspend the activities of the PNC temporarily,” he insisted.

Michael Ebo Asamoah described the EC as being a joke of the party as it chooses to just suspend elected officials from an election supervised by the EC, giving the election organizing body no respect.

“The EC must intervene now as what is happening in the PNC is not good for democracy and our political history,” he repeated.

To him, the behavior of the PNC confirms claims of most of the smaller political parties being a conduit for making money and bending to the will of the bigger parties. “The PNC is fighting over money. The bigger political parties know they can use the smaller ones during elections and finances them. I am sure the money the PNC is fighting over is from one of the bigger political parties.”

He charged the EC to sit up and deal with political parties such as the PNC because “they are no 3rd force and only resurrect 6 months prior to elections.”

On his accord, any party without an MP in parliament should be dissolved.

Background

Some disgruntled leaders of the troubled People’s National Convention (PNC) say they will use legal means to restrain any of its suspended members should they decide to officially partake in activities of the party.

They in particular said they don’t mind causing the ‘arrest’ of their National Chairman, Moses Dani Baah, whom they, on their own, suspended on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, if he attempts to be involved in party issues.

Cracks in the PNC have worsened following the suspension of the party’s General Secretary, Janet Nabla, by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on August 28, 2021, over allegations of gross misconduct, insubordination, and incompetence.

She has vehemently rejected the indefinite suspension.

On Tuesday, another group, comprising some regional chairmen of the party, claimed they are part of the PNC’s NEC and took a decision to also remove the party’s leader, David Apasera, and its National Chairman, Moses Dani Baah.

They also announced the reinstatement of Nabla who had alleged that Mr. Dani Baah and Mr. Apasara embezzled funds to the tune of GHS70,000 from the party’s coffers.
