Honourable Andrew Egyapa Mercer, Member of Parliament (MP) for Sekondi Constituency, has welcomed the announcement made by Investec Bank Ltd last week after the signing of a EUR 215 million agreement to finance two major hospital projects in Ghana to help improve the health care delivery system in the country.

Hon. Andrew Mercer said: “The projects are part of the Republic of Ghana’s initiative to significantly expand and develop its regional healthcare infrastructure and services, by improving access to quality healthcare delivery services in the post COVID environment for a population estimated over 3 million people in an area covering 24,000km in the Western Region.”

Hon. Mercer said part of the funding will be used to rehabilitate the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital into a first-class health facility to deliver quality healthcare services as well as construct a new Hospital Infrastructure in Agona, both within the Western Region enclave.

The Effie Nkwanta Hospital project once completed will have a centre of excellence for maternity health services to help reduce maternal mortality rate, obstetrics unit, gynaecology unit, and neonatal care (NICU).

The rehabilitation will make provision for a trauma and emergency unit, a burns unit, a medical imaging laboratory, advanced laboratory services and a catheterization laboratory/angiography and chemotherapy unit that will help offer needed medical services to the people within the Sekondi Metropolis and the Region at large.

He further disclosed that as part of the agreement, training will be provided to physicians, nurses and paramedics as part of the project implementation.

Hon. Mercer stressed that the success of these two projects is attributable to all the Members of Parliament within the Region for the immeasurable contributions they all made towards this initiative.
