Asamoah Gyan has sent a cryptic message on social media after Ghana laboured in defeat against South Africa in the second qualifying match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana’s hopes of returning to the World Cup was dealt a major blow after losing 1-0 against old foes South Africa in the 2022 qualifying Group G clash at the FNB Stadium in Soweto on Monday.

A late goal from Bongokuhle Hlongwane separated the teams after 90 hard-fought minutes, but Bafana Bafana were worthy winners over a toothless Black Stars outfit after being the more proactive and dangerous team in attack.

The Black Stars had zero shot on target in the whole game, and this has prompted alarming reaction amongst some soccer-loving Ghanaians.

In recent times, the four-time Africa champions have been struggling in front of goal in the absence of the country’s all-time leading scorer Asamoah Gyan.

Gyan — who led the line for the West Africa giants for sixteen years — is currently unattached and therefore has been overlooked for selection since Charles Akonnor took over the reins in January 15, 2020.

The Sunderland and Udinese striker heavily criticized recently in the media space following a suggestion by ace sports journalist Kwabena Yeboah that he must be included in the team should he improve his fitness level ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations championship in Cameroon next year.

A day after the Black Stars loss in Soweto, the 35-year-old took to Twitter to post an equivocal photo with the caption “Success isn’t always what it seems”.

Gyan is currently unattached following the expiration of his contract with local side Legon Cities FC.

Meanwhile, the result at the FNB Stadium sees South Africa top the log with four points, while Ghana remains on three. Zimbabwe and Ethiopia – who meet in Bahir Dar on Tuesday – are on one and zero points respectively.
