Black Stars coach Charles Akonnor was impressed with the performance of his players despite the team’s defeat to the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Bongokhule Hlongwane’s goal in the 83rd minute sent South Africa to the top of Group G of the World Cup qualifiers after a 1-0 win over the Black Stars at the FnB Stadium on Monday.

Percy Tau scored from a header eight minutes to end the first half following a sweet delivery from the flanks but it was ruled offside.

It was an uninspiring performance from the Black Stars who have been poor in their last two games in the World Cup qualifiers.

Speaking at the post-match conference the Black Stars coach admitted that his team played well despite losing their first game in the qualifiers.

“We started well in the first half. We were tactically very disciplined,” explained Akonnor.

“I mean it went the way we wanted but we were not clinical upfront and that was the problem.

“But I was satisfied with the way we played in terms of controlling the game”.

The Black Stars will play Zimbabwe in a doubleheader in October in their next game in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
