World Cup Qualifier: Ghana gets 'lucky win' over Ethiopia courtesy Wakaso's 40-yard screamer [Video]

The Black Stars of Ghana had a lucky win over Ethiopia in their first FIFA World Cup qualifying match at the Cape Coast stadium on Friday.

A 40-yard screamer from midfielder Mubarak Wakaso which was poorly handled by the Ethiopian goalkeeper was the only goal the Black Stars scored after putting up an abysmal performance.

Ghana had the majority of possession but failed to create any meaningful chances to put

Ethiopian goalkeeper Teklemariam Shamko to the test.

The four-time AFCON champions passed the ball around for the first 30 minutes of the game, consistently breaking through the Ethiopian defence’s backline, but were let down by their final third passes, leaving fans frustrated.

The deadlock was broken in the 35th minute of the game, when Mubarak Wakaso’s 40-yard screamer squirmed between Shamko’s legs and into the net, sending the fans into a frenzy.

The Black Stars received some bad news when Daniel Kofi Kyereh came on for his international debut, replacing the unfortunate Jeffrey Schlupp, who suffered an injury.

Ghana improved in terms of shots on target in the second half of the game, putting the Ethiopian goalkeeper under pressure as Samuel Owusu and Andre Ayew forced Teklemariam Shamko into an incredible double save to keep his team in the game.

Shemeket Gugsa had Ethiopia’s only shot on goal, a powerful strike that forced Richard Ofori to parry the ball away.

The Black Stars now lead Group G with three points after South Africa and Zimbabwe drew 0-0.

Ghana will now travel to South Africa for the World Cup qualifiers’ second group game.
