Portugal’s dramatic comeback over Republic of Ireland on Wednesday has given Cristiano Ronaldo to break Ali Daei international goals record.

The 36-year-old was level with Daei heading into the match against Ireland having scored five times at Euro 2020.

But he had struggled in Portugal’s first three World Cup qualifiers, scoring just once against Luxembourg.

It looked set to be another frustrating night for the new Manchester United blockbuster signing early in the first half after missing early penalty, credit to Bruno Fernandes.

Bruno Fernandes had won his country a penalty after Jeff Hendrick was adjudged to have brought the midfielder down inside the box.

Ronaldo stepped up to take the resulting spot kick, but he saw his effort saved by the young Gavin Bazunu.

The 19-year-old put in a heroic effort in the first half to keep Portugal’s attacking players at bay as Ireland managed to take the lead with a lone goal halftime after John Egan gave the visitors the lead.

Portugal were struggling to find a way past Ireland’s rigid defence and it looked as though Stephen Kenny’s side were going to hold on for a valuable three points.

However, Ronaldo can never be counted out, as he proved late on with a brilliant header past Bazunu to level for his country as that goal pushed him past Daei’s record.

As if that wasn’t enough for the night as there was still time for more drama as Ronaldo popped up with the winner deep into stoppage time.

Wild celebrations followed as Ronaldo ripped off his shirt before being surrounded by his team-mates.

And the 36-year-old was delighted that his new goals record came on a dramatic evening.

“I’m very happy, not only because I beat the record, but for the special moments that we had,” he said
