Aug. 27 (UPI) — Nora strengthened into a hurricane along Mexico’s Pacific coast, forecasters said Saturday.

In its 7 a.m. CDT update, the National Hurricane Center said the eye of the storm was located about 180 miles south of Cabo Corrientes, Mexico, and 460 miles southeast of Cabo San Lucas. It had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and was heading north-northwest at 10 mph.

A hurricane warning was in effect for Manzanillo, Mexico, north to San Blas and a tropical storm warning was in place from Tecpan de Galeana to Manzanillo and north of San Blas to Mazatlan. A hurricane watch was in effect for south of Manzanillo to Lazaro Cardenas and north of San Blas to Mazatlan.

The storm is expected to further strengthen as is travels northwest, hugging the Mexican coast.

“On the forecast track, the center of Nora is expected to approach the southwestern coast of Mexico later today and pass very near the coast of the states of Jalisco and Nayarit by tonight,” the NHC said. “Nora is then forecast to approach and move into the Gulf of California on Sunday and Monday.”
