Bottles were thrown between Marseille players and Nice fans during their Ligue 1 match on Sunday, forcing them to be separated. An on-pitch brawl ensued, forcing match officials to postpone the game.

Dimitri Payet, a former West Ham player, was hit on the back of the head by a bottle thrown from the stands, which the Marseille forward threw back at Nice fans, resulting in a clash on the pitch between players and supporters. Nice players and stewards attempted to intervene, but more projectiles were thrown, and the referee decided to remove the teams from the field.

Throughout the game, a section of the home crowd pelted the visiting Marseille players with bottles, prompting the stadium announcer to tell the crowd to stop throwing objects at the players.

Marseille head coach Jorge Sampaoli was enraged by the situation and had to be restrained by his backroom staff from confronting Nice officials.

Both teams retreated to the tunnel, and play was halted for more than an hour before Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivère appealed to fans for calm over the sound system, and the home players returned to the pitch to warm up.

Nice was leading 1-0 at the time, thanks to a goal from Kasper Dolberg when the incident occurred in the 75th minute.
