Aug. 17 (UPI) — AMC Studios is developing a new show inspired by Lives of the Mayfair Witches.

The studio said in a press release Tuesday that it has opened a writers’ room to explore a potential series based on the Anne Rice novel for AMC+ and AMC.

Esta Spaulding (Masters of Sex, On Becoming a God in Central Florida) and Michelle Ashford (Masters of Sex, The Pacific), will serve as writers and executive producers. Spaulding will also serve as showrunner if the series is greenlit.

Lives of the Mayfair Witches follows an intuitive young neurosurgeon who discovers that she is the unlikely heir to a family of witches.

“As she grapples with her newfound powers, she must contend with a sinister presence that has haunted her family for generations,” an official description reads.

AMC Networks acquired the rights to 18 of Rice’s works, including the The Vampire Chronicles and Lives of the Mayfair Witches series, in June. It gave the greenlight to a series based on Interview with the Vampire that will premiere in 2022.

Producer Mark Johnson (Breaking Bad) will develop the Anne Rice universe for AMC and AMC+.

“We have an enormous amount of ambition for these iconic works, which have captivated and entertained millions of fans around the world, so it is gratifying to be moving so quickly from the Interview greenlight to exploring a second series with such talented and accomplished writers and creators as Esta and Michelle,” AMC Networks and AMC Studios president of original programming Dan McDermott said.

“We take our responsibility to deliver compelling television to both existing and new fans of this material incredibly seriously, as we move deliberately to develop these titles into a new franchise and universe for AMC+ and AMC,” he added.

Previous adaptations of Rice’s works include the 1994 film Interview with the Vampire starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, and the 2002 movie Queen of the Damned with Stuart Townsend and Aaliyah.
