Management of the Regional Maritime University is calling on government to consider asphalting the campus roads.
According to them, it will be a step in the right direction to give the roads in the institution a facelift, as work is ongoing on the Accra- Tema beach road.
The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Elvis Nyarko made the request at the 15th congregation of the Regional Maritime University held on Monday, August 2, 2021.
“The Minister and Special Guest of Honour, one of the issues of great concern to us as an institution is the state of our roads. Sir, I want to use this unique opportunity to humbly plead with you to come to our aid. We specifically request that, if possible, the Minister of Roads and Highways could kindly direct the contractor currently working on the Accra-Tema beach road to resurface the RMU campus roads, which is about two (2) kilometres”.
“Mr. Minister, this Tema-Beach road construction works is just like it is popularly said; ‘Jesus is passing this way,’ so we plead that you have pity on us and let the construction works pass through RMU too.”
Prof. Elvis Nyarko announced the acquisition of a training vessel as part of the Regional Maritime University Modernization Project.
“The Exim Bank of Korea is supporting the Government of Ghana to modernize the Regional Maritime University at a total cost of about $150,000,000.00. Indeed, this is the first time since the establishment of the institution in 1958 that such a modernization programme will be carried out, and the university is very grateful to the Government of the New Patriotic Party, under the leadership of His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo for this great and historic initiative. Among the scope of works of this project is the provision of a training ship to the Regional Maritime University, which will be a special purpose new vessel, designed with the concept of training and trading”.
Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta who was the special Guest of Honour for the 15th congregation noted that asphalting of the 2km campus road will be considered.
“The request of my friend and brother Vice-Chancellor for this university regarding the facelift of the university’s roads, as I have said this is a university of excellence and everything here must be facelifted to signify the image. I want to assure the board, Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor, management and students that the request is being taken care of”.
Mr. Amoako-Attah charged the graduands to eschew corrupt practices as they enter their professional fields.
“Be good citizens and uphold high moral standards by saturating the environment in which you will live and work as you enter the world of work with the spirit of service, enterprise, and integrity. In your professional life, settle for nothing less than excellence, seek the truth in everything you do and avoid corruption in all that you do. Carry out your duties with pride and humility, make no mistakes as you try to meet the standards of your profession and make a mark in doing what you love”.
