The standard Sarkodie has raised in the rap game in Ghana and Africa is unparalleled.
His legacy and the fact that’s he’s the most decorated rapper in Africa will forever reverberate in the annals of showbiz on the continent.
In case you are not aware, Sarkodie has received 92 awards from 165 nominations, including 22 Ghana Awards.
Makye, his debut studio album, won him three awards at both the 4syte TV Video Awards and Ghana Awards. We can go on and on to tell you how great Sarkodie is but just like everything that has a beginning, his supremacy and reign could soon come to an end.
When this happens, there should be a worthy replacement so we can still enjoy pure, unadulterated rap songs, don’t you think so? Fortunately, we have young and bursting rappers who can do the job and that’s what our focus will be today in this article.
1. Eno Barony
Eno Barony made history at the just ended 2021 Vodafone Ghana Awards (VGMAs) by becoming the first female rapper to win the Best Rapper of the Year award. She is also the reigning Best Rapper at the 2021 3Music Award and we all know the strong pedigree she has established to get to this point.
Born Ruth Eno Adjoa Amankwah Nyame Adom, Eno Barony burst onto the scene after she made a ‘refix’ of Joey B’s ‘Tonga’ song in 2014.
2. Strongman
Strongman is really a strong man when it comes to lyrics, timing, rhyme and all the rudiments of rap. His amazing songwriting ability makes him one of the best young rappers of his generation.
Born Vincent Osei Kwaku Vincent, Strongman won the maiden edition of The Next Big Thing in GH in 2012. Strongman floored Teephlow who is also on this list in the finals and earned the bragging right as one of the prospective hottest commodities in Ghana.
Sarkodie recruited Strongman to his SarkCess record label for a business marriage which unfortunately did not end well as they unexpectedly severed their ties. Strongman is a worthy contender to ascend the throne when Sarkodie drops his microphone.
Teephlow is one of the best rappers whose punchlines define that’s he chose rap music as the right career. That explains why there is a rivalry between him and Strongman because it seems they are both on the same path with a similar identity.
Teephlow is also considered a great songwriter and this is a fact Hammer of the Last Two fame attested not too long ago. Hammer famously said, ‘Let me say this, I was a fan of Teephlow even before we met. He is like American rapper Nas, he’s the kinda that you have to listen to. He’s the most prolific writer I’ve ever dealt with, he said during an interview with MzGee.’
This young rapper was one of the budding artistes Sarkodie recruited on his Biibi Ba project two years ago which also featured Amerado, Lyrical Joe, Frequency, Kofi Mole, Toy Boi, Yeyo, 2 Fyngerz, O’BKay and CJ Biggerman on it.
He’s doing well on the scene with some relatively hit songs to his name and we guess it wouldn’t be long before he gets to the top and reach Sarkodie’s standard.
Kofi Mole is another product of the Biibi Ba project who is doing well (in Mr. Macaroni’s voice…LOL!) His Don’t Be Late, Mensah and Atswei are great songs that have assumed cult status in Hiphop parameters already. Definitely, he has what it takes to replace King Sark if he fades out into oblivion.
