June 25 (UPI) — Authorities in California captured the last of the 40 cows that escaped from a slaughterhouse days earlier and the bovine will now have a new home thanks to songwriter Diane Warren.
The cows escaped from the Manning Beef slaughterhouse in Pica Rivera on Tuesday night, and all but one of the animals were recaptured by Wednesday morning.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said deputies located the final cow early Thursday morning near the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area, about 5 miles from the slaughterhouse.
The cow was captured with the help of a pair of ranchers about 8:15 a.m. Thursday.
Pico Rivera city officials said later Thursday that Diane Warren, writer of hit songs including “Un-break my Heart,” had come forward and offered to pay to have the cow transferred to an animal sanctuary.
Warren had earlier tweeted in support of the escaped cows.
“These poor babies escaping for their lives. They know their fate. How cruel human beings are,” she wrote.
Pico Rivera City Manager Steve Carmona said officials are in talks with Manning Beef about finding sanctuary homes for the rest of the escaped cows.
