June 23 (UPI) — Authorities in California said 38 cows were captured and at least one remains on the loose after the herd escaped from a slaughterhouse.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the herd of about 40 cows escaped from a Pico Rivera slaughterhouse Tuesday evening, and deputies were summoned to the Beverly Road and Durfee Avenue area, about a mile from the slaughterhouse, about 8:35 p.m.

Residents said the cows were stampeding through the streets and damaged fences, mailboxes and cars.

Authorities chased the cows into a cul-de-sac, where deputies and a group of ranchers wielding lassos were able to corral them onto a trailer.

The sheriff’s office said 38 cows were captured and one of the animals was shot and killed by a deputy when it charged at a family. At least one cow is believed to remain on the loose.
