He’s described his tattoos as being like a map of his life.
And Ryan Phillippe yesterday showed off some recently-added ink work to his arm as he stepped out with his children Ava and Deacon for lunch in West Hollywood.
The 37-year-old star and former husband of Reese Witherspoon appears to be going for the full ‘sleeve’ on his left arm, joining the likes of David Beckham and Maroon 5 star Adam Levine.

Ryan has now had some roses etched
over his left bicep, adding to the large phoenix rising from the ashes
on his forearm and the squiggly patterns on his shoulder.
The Lincoln Lawyer actor has a total
of six tattoos – and takes the whole thing quite seriously – saying it
is a process which gives him control in his life.
Speaking to tattoo magazine Inked in
2010, Phillippe revealed: ‘Tattoos are like a map to your life.
Permanence is bravery. So many
things in our lives aren’t permanent. Nothing lasts forever.’

Ryan also said in the same interview
how he had a ladybug tat on his foot covered up with stingray – because
of its ‘significance with an ex’.
He was, of course, referring to Reese Witherspoon – who he has children Ava, 12, and eight-year-old Deacon with.
Phillippe said of his decision to have
the stingray design: ‘When people ask me why, I say, “Any animal that
could take down the Crocodile Hunter deserves my respect”.’

Ryan’s marriage to Reese – who is now
pregnant with her third child with husband Jim Toth – crumbled in 2006
amid claims of infidelity with his Stop-Loss co-star Abbie Cornish.
The ensuing bad Press inspired him to get the phrase ‘words cannot harm me’ tattooed on his leg.
He told Inked magazine: ‘I was in this place where I was tired of being talked s*** about.
‘No
one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes. But I am a decent person. I got
so sick of being told how s****y I was.’
Yesterday Ryan took his two children out for lunch at Roscoe’s House of
Chicken ‘n Waffles.
