Agnes Asangalisa Chigabatia, one time Member of Parliament for Builsa North and current Upper East Regional Chairperson of the New Patriotic Party has won the right to represent the party in the 2012 parliamentary elections.

In a primary held on Friday, a day earlier than the nationally stipulated date to allow for a major funeral in the constituency, Mrs Chigabatia, who also served as a deputy Regional Minister, polled 171 votes to defeat her two male opponents, Thomas Alonsi, a former District Chief Executive, who polled 116 votes and James Abukasey with 70 votes.

Mrs Chigabatia thus becomes the first Parliamentary candidate of the NPP for next year’s election. Primaries will be held in 219 other constituencies on Saturday April 30, 2011.

Elections in 10 constituencies, Bekwai, Bosome-Freho, Nkawkaw, Sege, Obom-Domeabra, Sissala East, Sissala West, Jirapa, Zebilla, and Talensi would be held at a later date, according to a notice from the Party.
