Bolivian authorities say retired police General Rene Sanabria and another Bolivian were arrested on Thursday.
A US official says that the two men were sent to Miami to face cocaine smuggling charges.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to political sensitivities.
Bolivia’s President Evo Morales expelled US drug agents in 2008 – accusing them of inciting his political opponents. Relations remain tense.
Sanabria headed Bolivia’s counternarcotics police in 2007-2008. He was named chief of the Interior Ministry’s intelligence center the following year.
