Gert van Schalkwyk, one of the so-called “Waterkloof Four”, ate three double cheeseburgers and drank a chocolate milkshake after being released under correctional supervision.

He told Beeld newspaper in an interview published on Tuesday that he learnt in jail the value of small things, such as “fresh air, green grass and time with your family”.

Van Schalkwyk said he had realised long before being sent to Zonderwater prison outside Pretoria that he had “made a mistake” in December 2001, when he and three friends murdered a homeless man, who was never identified.

He said it was difficult to explain how he felt after being released on Monday and that it had not really sunk in yet.

His brother had showed him how a Blackberry cellphone works.

    “I don’t know these things.”

Van Schalkwyk and one of his co-accused, Reinach Tiedt, were released under correctional supervision after serving three years of a 12-year sentence for the murder.

The other two co-accused are still being held in Pretoria Central prison. – Sapa
