Silvano Martina, agent of Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic, has told Goal.com that the former Serbia international will undergo knee surgery in the next few days.

The centre-back ruptured his cruciate ligament after a challenge in United’s Champions League clash with Basel earlier this month and will be unavailable for the remainder of the 2011-12 campaign due to the injury.

“Vidic will be operated upon in the upcoming days. Obviously, rupturing your cruciate ligament is not a small injury, but thanks to the medical progress in recent years it’s similar to a meniscus problem some 20 years ago,” Martina said.

“Of course, it will take some time before he returns to the pitch. However, I have no doubts whatsoever that he will recover 100 per cent.”

The 30-year-old Vidic has made close to 250 official appearances in all competitions for Manchester United since joining them from Spartak Moscow in January 2006.
