JA Plant Pool Ghana Limited has appealed to the government to enforce laws that compel foreign contractors to subcontract at least 40 percent of all contract jobs to local contractors.

“With the various infrastructural development projects being undertaken in the country, we seize this opportunity to call on government to promulgate and enforce the local content law, which will compel all foreign contractors to subcontract at least 40 percent of all contract jobs to local contractors.”

The Managing Director of JA Plant Pool Ghana Limited, Lolu Akindele made the call during the official opening of the company’s ultra-modern new Kumasi office at a colourful ceremony at Kodie.

JA Plant Pool Ghana Limited is engaged in the sale, rental and leasing of earth moving equipment, heavy duty trucks and machinery and Yutong buses in the country presently.

Mr. Akindele said enforcing the local content law would bring several benefits to the country, suggesting that the law should cover all sectors of the economy including oil and gas, mining, construction, services just to mention a few.

Touching on the benefits that Ghana could derive from the enforcement of the law, he pointed out that “this will empower local contractors, create employment and impact positively on the economy as a whole.”

He announced that his outfit has executed $100 million worth of contracts with its overseas suppliers, promising that the company is ever ready to partner local contractors in the supply of equipment and other ancillary services.

Mr. Akindele announced that JA Plant Pool Ghana Limited has within the last three years imported about 1,000 Yutong buses and 900 heavy duty equipment and trucks.

The company, he intimated, is passionate about building the capacity of the people and has accordingly come up with innovative and special pre-finance packages with flexible payment terms for the supply of heavy duty vehicles to MMDAs and contractors.

The company, which was established in the 1970s, aims at becoming the leading provider of plant, machinery, buses and equipment for construction, mining, oil and gas, transportation, agriculture and waste management sectors of Ghana and the sub-region by 2015.

The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s representative, Nana Akyemfuor Kwame Akowuah II, Asafohene, in his succinct remarks, commended JA Plant Pool officials for establishing an office in Kumasi.

He admonished the company to recruit some of the local people in the communities that they operate to help create an atmosphere of love and unity between the company and the local people.

S.O. Appiah, who represented the Ashanti Regional Minister, said the government recognizes the key role played by private companies in the transformation of the country.
