The Directorate of Veterinary Services at Opuwo last week started a vaccination campaign against lung disease and rabies in livestock in the northern parts of the Kunene Region.

The campaign has been extended to include electronic ear-tagging and a census for the animals in the region.About 154 000 animals have been targeted for the campaign and the directorate has deployed six teams to carry it out. “We deliberately started with the farmers in the area of the Epupa constituency, because that’s where most of the nomadic farmers are.

The farmers there move from one place to another in search of better grazing for their livestock,” Opuwo-based veterinarian Shepherd Kamudyariwa said.

Kamundyariwa said the period from May to July is normally a very good time for conducting vaccination campaigns and animal censuses because farmers had not yet left their home

steads for the cattle posts by then. The possibility of vaccinating the majority of the livestock this year is very high, given the good rainfall.
