The Ghana Football Association has announced that the name Premier League side Kessben FC has been changed to Medeama Sporting Club.
In July last year, local businessman Moses Armah completed the biggest full takeover of the side in a deal worth US$ 600,000. But initial attempts to change the name of the club was denied by the Ghana FA and referred the matter to its Legal Committee to decide whether it was permissible to have their name changed in the course of the season.
“We are very happy that the GFA has now finally given us the green light to rename the club and that make me very happy. That what we’ve been pushing for all this while and I’m happy the authorities at the FA in their own wisdom have now agreed for us to change our name,” Medeama club president Moses Armah said.
“So in simple terms I can confirm that from now on there is no Kessben FC in the top flight league but only Medeama Sporting Club. We’re convinced the spirit is back for the second half of the season.”
The club will move their home ground to Tarkwa following the completion of a modern stadium in the mining town. Medeama FC last year enjoyed some financial support of sponsors of the Black Stars Goldfields Limited.
